Keeping it spicy, farmers are bringing their colorful array of peppers to market this season. Now is the time to enjoy the abundance of the Piperaceae family of pungent flowered plants: in salads, stir-fries, sauces, and more.

From the delicious earthiness of the blistered shishito pepper, to the crisp and classic red, yellow, or orange bell in a salad, the heat of Cayenne or Thai Pepper, or the fire of the supremely hot Ghost Pepper or Carolina Reaper— the pepper family often has a little spicy (or not spicy) something for almost everyone.

Other than picking the right variety, what’s the secret to growing hot peppers in Oregon? Some say it’s the chemistry of the soil that makes a difference, and some farmers say that to grow hot peppers in Oregon, one must start VERY VERY early in the season. The longer and hotter the season, the hotter the pepper! What do your favorite farmers say?

If hot peppers aren’t for you, make sure to enjoy the season with sweet Italian peppers and mild Poblano, Anaheim, or Banana Pepper, or medium peppers such as jalapeno or serrano.
