People’s Food Co-op Values

People’s Food Cooperative’s values are member-driven and are based on the 7 Cooperative Principles and our vision statement.

Healthy, Delicious Foods Our Customers Can Trust:

People's product choices contribute to the health of consumers, food producers and the earth. We give priority to whole, organically grown, locally produced food, purchased directly from producers whenever possible. We will also give priority to farmers and producers based on the humanness with which they treat their animals.

Ecological Responsibility:

We take extreme measures to mitigate environmental burdens while creating a beautiful space that is human-scale and authentic. Our building methods and materials, as well as our operational techniques, are a showcase that normalizes the 7th generation philosophy which believes that what we put in can become what the future may use.

Localization and Cooperation:

People’s recognizes the connection between a thriving local economy and the growing cooperative movement worldwide. People’s contributes to a healthy local food system, which provides a strong foundation for our economy. Our local identity and unique character is based in establishing relationships that allow us to directly source our products from local businesses, farmers and producers. Member-Ownership and participation in our Co-op is a valuable asset to our community. People’s strengthens the cooperative movement by purchasing from cooperatives around the world and by networking with local, regional and national cooperative organizations.

Diversity and Community:

People’s fosters empowerment and enhancement of community through services and programs, as well as through structure and policy. We are committed to maintaining a welcoming environment that is not only void of discrimination but also celebrates the diversity and creativity of the individuals and families that make up our community. People’s lively community marketplace and common areas create opportunities for people to make connections.

Workers Rights:

People’s recognizes the importance of workers rights as an integral aspect of community vitality. We demonstrate our respect for our workers by creating an empowering, non-hierarchical work environment that utilizes democratic decision-making processes. We value and strive for a living wage and benefits for everyone on staff. We extend our support of these values to workers worldwide by prioritizing products made by companies that provide fair treatment of their laborers.

Trust/Honesty and Transparency:

Our business practices emphasize responsible use of member resources. People’s exhibits its commitment to trust and honesty by displaying well-researched, reliable product and co-op information. People’s welcomes owner and non-owner alike into our store. We invite all persons to consider the benefits and responsibilities of Member-Ownership. We value transparency and provide our Member-Owners many opportunities to participate in governing the store. You can trust the ownership when you’re one of the owners!

Education and Information:

People's strives to be an educational resource for our growing community. We provide education for Member-Owners, board of directors, and staff so that they may contribute effectively to the development of our Co-op, the community, and the cooperative movement.
